Загалом у дослідженні взяли участь понад 9 тисяч осіб віком від 35 до 55 років. Вчені помітили, що у тих, хто повністю відмовився від алкоголю, виникла деменція.
Цей симптом діагностували у майже 400 учасників за 23 спостереження. Середній вік діагнозу складав 76 років.
А у тих, хто вживав понад 14 одиниць алкоголю, збільшувалася ймовірність розвитку деменції на 17 відсотків з кожними додатковими 7 одиницями.
За словами фахівців, споживання 1-14 одиниць алкоголю в тиждень може захистити мозок, проте слід враховувати всі пов’язані з цим ризики, в тому числі захворювання печінки і рак.
Проте вчені не називають точну причину зв’язку між повною відмовою від алкоголю та деменцією.
